2021 King Estate Grand Oak Pinot Noir
-
Tasting Notes
-
A beautiful ruby red in the glass, the wine opens on the nose with red fruit aromatics of strawberry, raspberry and red plum accompanied by notes of violet and peony with savory accents of graphite, cedar and tobacco. A delicate and smooth entry expands into a beautiful, balanced wine that showcases winemakers’ careful craftsmanship. The result is a beautiful expression of the vineyard and a classic, delicious Willamette Valley Pinot Noir.

Vineyard Notes
-
Originally planted in 2001 as Nicholas Vineyard, the 40-acre site was acquired by the Austin family in 2014 and renamed Grand Oak Vineyard. Elevation is between 350 and 650 feet. With just 33 acres under vine, Grand Oak features two types of volcanic soils, Jory and Laurelwood. Rich in iron, Jory is the official state soil of Oregon. Laurelwood soil is unusual for the area. It consists of windblown loess over a well-drained volcanic foundation.

Winemaker Notes
-
Whole clusters were destemmed and cold soaked for 48 hours with daily pump overs. The wine was fermented in a stainless steel open top tank where it was punched down twice a day and fermented on the skins to dryness. It was then pressed off the skins and put down to barrel for secondary malolactic fermentation. Aged in French oak for 18 months, 35% new.
