2017 King Estate Weinbau Merlot

Tasting Notes

In the glass the wine glistens a deep ruby with crimson edges. A robust nose is ripe with plum, blackberries, cedar, leather, dry roses, clove, anise, toast, sweet oak and cocoa. The wine starts off round and silky, revealing flavors of ripe plum, cassis, tobacco, toast, blueberry, rose water and cocoa powder. On the mid-palate structured tannins and balanced acidity provide the backbone that carries through for a lasting finish.

Vineyard Notes

Located in the Wahluke Slope sub-AVA of the greater Columbia Valley AVA, Weinbau's south-facing alluvial slope consists of perfectly draining soils. The vineyard experiences moderate temperatures that help elongate hang time with ideal ripening conditions. The Kennewick silt loam soils consistently impart distinct Merlot characteristics like blackberry, cocoa and ripe plum.

Winemaker Notes

The fruit was cold soaked for 48 hours with daily pump overs, then fermented in a stainless steel open top tank with twice daily punch downs. Aged 27 months in French oak, 41% new. 100% Weinbau Vineyard Merlot.
