A Noble Blend

In the Alsace region of France, by government decree, only four grapes may be used to make Grand Cru wines, or wines from the region’s top vineyards. These four varietals – Pinot Gris, Riesling, Muscat and Gewürztraminer – are known as Alsace’s noble grapes. These same grapes comprise our estate-grown, 100% Biodynamic® Four Nobles Cuvée Blanc, which is French for white blend. While King Estate is not bound by French regulations, we have found that our cool climate creates perfect growing conditions for the grapes used to make this special wine.

Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer are always the dominant varietals in our Four Nobles Cuvée Blanc, although the percentages vary. “The aromatics and fruitfulness of the dominant wines provide a nice base to the blend,” says Assistant Winemaker Leah Lyon. All four noble grapes exhibit a lovely perfume that distinguishes them from other white wines, but the aromatics of Muscat and Riesling are especially robust. “We strive to use the four varietals in a harmonious way that shows the distinctive characteristics of each grape,” Leah says.

Only 135 cases of this wine were made. Serve it well chilled, paired with lighter foods such as chicken or summer salads, cheeses and even desserts. Most of all, don’t rush the experience. “The more time you spend with this wine, the more it keeps opening up,” Leah notes. “You can go back multiple times and you’ll keep discovering new dimensions.” As you sniff and taste, the aromas and flavors may summon up past experiences. “Let your mind wander and see where it takes you,” Leah says, “because when you savor wine, it really is an exercise in memory.”
